Working as a Collective

As an educational collective, Academia is a promise centred around three essential tenets: collaborative, inclusive, creative. Our commitment to these tenets begins internally and emanates outwards. From an internal perspective, we believe that happy and fulfilled team members are able to deliver the best possible service and care, to each and every student. This requires that we ensure a collaborative space between colleagues, teachers and management to foster a deeper understanding of various unique perspectives, and how they can come to contribute toward a mutually rewarding end goal. Our team also focuses on inclusivity, where a diversity of backgrounds and beliefs work together cohesively.

The result of this is a level of excellence that no individual alone can achieve – from curriculum to lesson planning to delivery. We create worksheets and learning materials that are thoughtful, distinct, and best-in-class. We work together to find different ways to communicate concepts and inspire critical thought in young minds. We hold steadfast in our commitment to a humanities-oriented philosophy, to be a hub that allows for endless possibilities and a further exploration of potential.

Our Mission and Vision

Academia’s mission is to make learning intuitive in order to maximise educational outcomes for every student. Our aim is to be a global institution, providing practical, evidence-based education that reduces the burden on students by making learning as effortless, yet as effective as possible. We do not take shortcuts in developing the best possible curriculum, and will never resort to rote memorisation or short-term gimmicks that inevitably backfire. We seek to empower our teachers to tailor and deliver our curriculum in a manner that is engaging and compelling.

Deep Subject Focus

An important part of becoming a teacher at Academia is recognising that it is different from teaching in a public school. At Academia, teachers handle a single subject, a fraction of the number of students, and are not expected to educate students on varied interests, life values, or co-curricular activities. Instead, teachers at Academia are expected to provide deep instruction and feedback at a more personalised and intrusive level. We recognise that becoming skilled at what we do requires a spirited and passionate focus on a single subject.

Societal Impact

Our goal is to deliver comprehensive excellence to our students. This means maximising their grade potential while enhancing their enthusiasm for learning. We do not select our students, and have taught students from many diverse walks of life, and many schools across Singapore. For students looking for a bit of extra help, and for students looking to perform beyond their peer level, we want to instill a love for English that often comes with progress and distinction. In 2021, our students had a remarkable performance, with over 80% achieving an AL1 for their English PSLE.

In addition to our regular classes, we are in conversation with potential partners to work towards offering pro-bono classes to underprivileged and at-risk children in Singapore. We believe that the confidence that comes with a strong grasp of the English language, alongside an improvement in academic performance at key junctures such as the PSLE and O-Levels, can significantly transform the lives of these youths in the long-term.

Our Ideal Candidate

Our ideal teacher has a passion for education – from teaching skills, to educational methods and pedagogy. They should be focused on their subject matter, and confident in their expertise. A teacher should always be focused on building their students’ confidence and abilities, and deeply concerned about each student’s engagement with the subject matter. Our ideal teacher excels in both communicating and listening, and is able to handle students with empathy and patience. Finally, our ideal teacher is collaborative – willing to work with their peers to improve their teaching skills, and proactive in offering recommendations and assistance when the team is facing challenges.
