Curriculum and Teaching

At Academia we are constantly on the lookout for caring and motivated teachers. Fresh graduates are encouraged to apply for our Training Contract, while experienced teachers are invited to apply for our lateral hire scheme. We take into consideration applicant teaching experience, from MOE experience to experience teaching privately, or in other tuition centres. In addition, we also consider a wide-range of academic, corporate, legal, and professional careers as relevant experience, evaluating each application on a case-to-case basis. At Academia, we believe that a diversity of backgrounds serves to improve the experience of our students. All lateral hires, regardless of experience, must undergo Academia’s internal training programme to familiarise themselves with Academia’s curriculum, educational pedagogy, and key teaching skills.

Academia Teaching Career Path

Within the Curriculum and Teaching Department, we separate our classes from Level 0 (Primary 1 to Primary 2) to Level 5 (General Paper). These levels can be found on our website, with further distinctions such as between the O-Levels and the Integrated Programme curriculum. Teachers typically choose which Levels they are comfortable teaching at, subject to individual competence and syllabus familiarity.

At Academia, fresh teachers start off as Trainee and Associate teachers, and are evaluated primarily on their teaching skills. Internally, Associate teachers are subject to class audits, whereby a senior teacher or director may sit in to co-teach and evaluate the teacher based on their understanding of materials, level of preparation, and engagement with students. This process also helps us provide feedback to the teacher to help improve performance. We also take into consideration external performance indicators, such as student performance, student feedback, and student retention rates. These external indicators are measured solely by the Front Office team, and teachers are not required to track any of these indicators on their own.

Specialist and Senior Specialists are teachers with demonstrated skills and abilities. From this point onwards, in addition to their teaching skills, teachers also work on developing their unique teaching personalities. Teachers must also choose between the teaching track and the management track. Teachers on the teaching track are fully focused on teaching and educating students, developing into Teaching Counsels. Meanwhile, on the management track, teachers may become Head Teachers, managing and mentoring their own teams of teachers.

Dedicated, highly-proficient, and experienced Teaching Counsels and Head Teachers will be nominated to become Teaching Directors and Associate Directors. Directors are equity partners in Academia, and play a crucial role in deciding its strategic, pedagogical, and philosophical direction.
